White hard acid wax (varnish), superimposed on a polished, heated graphical plate (zinc or copper), before the engraving process, creates a hard matte surface, making the process easy to read. Surface engraved during engraving are subjected to the next step of acid digestion. Due to the acid resistance of the wax, the coated surfaces remain intact.
